Cruel to Display Live Seafood In 'Death Row' Tanks?

It is interesting to read the letter to Today on 27th Aug 2007 by Dr Tan Chek Wee on the topic “It's Cruel for Stalls to Display Live Seafood In 'Death Row' Tanks”. I do not know that whether the subject title is drafted by Dr Tan or by Today editor. Just by the title, I am speechless. My immediate reaction is: does the seafood care about whether they are in “Death Row” Tanks or “KIV” Tanks? Does the seafood have feeling on how their predators name the living environment? I think what the sea creatures more interested is whether the living environment their predators give them before killing them is comfortable for their survival instead of the name.

It is interesting to see a Dr spent time on considering how we should name the tanks for sea creature instead of spending time to improve the living condition of many fellow human beings in substandard living condition.

What is the priority our top talents in Singapore spend time thinking about improving our situation?

Just to clarify, I am not an advocate for animal abuse. In fact, I think we should take care of the whole environment God entrusted to the Human race. However, they should be a priority on how we manage our resources.

Perhaps we should give those animals aircon room, play classical music and free flow of beers while they waiting to be killed?

One question that always pop up in discussions of these so-called cruelty to seafood is that do they even have the concept of pain?

And it seems ironic, or even hypocritical that these "animal lovers" on one hand love to personify these seafood and empathise with their fate, on the other gorges down meat without blinking an eye.

That was a VERY insensitive & dumb post. There are people who are known as VEGANS or VEGETARIANS who DO NOT take meat and care for the welfare all animals on the planet. Besides, who are you to tell someone else what he or she should do with his time? Of what great are you then? You are a shame to Christianity to be even mentioning God in your post. You are putting God in bad light.

I take the assumption when you mention God in your post you are referring to the God of the Christian faith, if that is true, this is so sad… Animals were part of God’s creation just like you and I, God matter of fact created animals before He even created mankind. Brother, if you are not up to par with the Bible, let me tall you, He even BLESS THEM! And what make you think that you are walking around on earth with a halo on your head thinking you are one rank higher than the animals when God have them in mind first? Adam was created with no power and no authority until God gave him instructions to manage His livestocks. Have you done your part? I challenge you to think will God praise you “Well done, my good and faithful servant” when you meet Him one day?

We all have different concerns, it just happen that Dr Tan is more concern of the welfare of animals and what makes you think that he is not concern of other welfare such as living condition as you referred to? By not displaying live animals in eatery it exhibit to our younger generation that though they will finally become dishes on the table it doest mean that we have to treat them like dirt. It teach them to be respectful to life, it teach them that though we all got to die one day we must learn to respect others. Is this a good enough reason that we can improves on our living condition? Are you respectful to others? Have you taught your children to be respectful to other living beings, human and animal alike?

Reference to your posting in May 10 on the change of penal code on homosexuality; much that I cant accept homosexuality that doest mean that I should go around condemning others. The Bible quoted very clearly in 1 Timothy 1:8-10 the Law is make good to the lawful and not the lawlessness which besides homosexuality there are many, many others including UNGODLINESS. So before you point your fingers unto other, blogs to spike others, please self check if what you do or say is godly and holy …

How you like to have a live cow or pig tie to the stall where you slice meat off their body in front of you? It’s the same theory with frogs, crabs, prawns, fishes display in the eatery stall.

woonder,

Did the crabs or the frogs told you that they don’t feel pain? Unless you heard from them, don’t act smart.

It’s obvious how little you know that there are a good number of animal lovers who is vegetarians... poor thing, you are so ill informed.

to YH koh, woonder & dk, big ears have had very good points, all 3 of u pityful souls have proved urselves to be extremely ill-informed about animal welfare & its advocates. not knowing any vegans or vegatarians do not mean these groups of pple do not exist. pls do some basic research on the relevant topics before penning nonsensical posts.

Thanks for the interesting article Mr Koh :) I missed monday's newspaper.

On the optimistic side, I think at least Dr Tan thought about the suffering of the animals.

But imo, no killing can ever be compassionate, "Killing" never abadon it's best friends "Suffering" and "Cruelty".

A lot of people will not feel like eating if they actually see their animals from life to death. It's just against our natural compassion. However, I am disappointed that Dr Tan chooses to avoid it by hoping they are out of side, I hope he will face it.

Avoiding these was exactly what I did b4 I became a veg, but eventually it became too much and I have to remove the blindfold.
